Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Educational inequality is a pervasive issue in Nigeria, characterized by disparities in access, quality, and outcomes across different socio-economic and geographic groups. Katsina Local Government faces significant challenges in addressing these disparities, with print media playing a vital role in bringing the issue to public attention. Reporting on educational inequalities involves highlighting systemic barriers such as inadequate funding, teacher shortages, and infrastructural deficiencies (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). However, journalists encounter numerous obstacles, including limited access to reliable data, political interference, and social resistance to critical reporting. These challenges undermine the effectiveness of print media in advocating for equitable educational policies and reforms (Olawale et al., 2023). This study explores the challenges faced by print media in reporting educational inequalities in Katsina Local Government and their implications for social advocacy.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of print media in addressing educational inequalities, reporting on this issue in Katsina Local Government is fraught with challenges. Journalists often face limited access to schools and officials, threats to their independence, and a lack of audience engagement with education-focused stories. These issues hinder the ability of print media to shed light on systemic inequalities and drive policy changes. This study aims to investigate these challenges and provide recommendations for enhancing the role of print media in reporting educational inequalities in Katsina Local Government.
